Negli Stati Uniti vivono alcuni esseri dotati di poteri eccezionali: gli Scanners. I loro cervelli sono in grado di collegarsi per telepatia con quelli di altri uomini, leggerne il pensiero, dominarne la volonta' e portarli anche ad azioni violente o ad uccidere. Da tempo molti scanners sono stati schiavizzati, usati come cavie e ridotti a tossicodipendenti, prossimi a morire, che vengono tenuti nascosti negli scantinati di un ospedale dallo spietato Dottor Morse.
